President Joe Biden will sit down with ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos on Friday in his first television interview since the presidential debate. Democrats are growing concerned about the presumptive nominee's mental and physical ability to continue in the race for the White House after his shaky performance against former President Donald Trump last week.

The full interview is scheduled to be broadcast and live-streamed on ABC.com on Friday, July 5, at 8 p.m. EDT.

Who is George Stephanopoulos?

Stephanopoulos is a co-anchor on ABC's “Good Morning America” and hosts the channel’s Sunday morning political talk show, “This Week.”

Before becoming a journalist in the mid-90s, Stephanopoulos served as an advisor to the Democratic party. He was the communications director for Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign and later became the White House Communications Director during Clinton’s presidency. After that, he worked as a senior advisor for President Clinton.

This won’t be Stephanopoulos’s first interview with the current president: he last interviewed Biden in August of 2021, when the president faced criticism after the United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Stephanopoulos has also moderated many presidential debates before, including a Democratic primary debate in 2020, a Republican presidential debate between Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum in 2012, and the final Democratic presidential debate between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in 2008.

Stephanopoulos missed a few days of Good Morning America recently after the death of his father, fueling speculation that he was leaving ABC’s morning show. He returned to the air on July 1.
