Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is now available to watch on Netflix, but there's a catch.

The second film in Sony's franchise revival can be streamed for subscribers of the streaming giant, but only in the US and not in the UK.

This follows the studio's pattern of releasing films onto Netflix US shortly after the cinema run ends, following Madame Web and Anyone But You.

In the UK, it's likely that Sky Cinema/Sky Go and NOW will stream the film first, but not until September, going by trends.

In the meantime, the film can be bought digitally by UK films fans from Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store and other digital retailers.

The film made more than $200 million at the box office, taking the franchise past the $1 billion point, but critical response was mixed, with the film currently standing at 42% from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

Digital Spy's own review of the film reads: "The new movie is a definite improvement on Afterlife. It's less reliant on the past – although can't quite rid itself of it – and is more confident in blending the family-friendly spooks with comedy.

Earlier this year, director Gil Kenan hinted at a potential follow-up movie to Frozen Empire.

"Look, we really care about the characters in this film. We feel like there is more story to be told," he said. "And I'm really hoping audiences connect with the adventure that the Spengler family goes on in this film.

"And if they do, then I really hope that we can continue this story."

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is available to buy digitally now, and can be streamed on Netflix for US subscribers.
