Gov. Jeff Landry ordered flags on state government property lowered to half-staff Thursday in honor of the man killed at former President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Pennsylvania last weekend.

Corey Comperatore was a former fire chief and Pennsylvania resident. He lost his life Saturday evening when a gunman opened fire on Trump in an attempt to assassinate the former president. When the shots began to ring out, Comperatore dove in front of his wife and daughter in order to protect them, according to the Associated Press.

“Exercising our First Amendment rights should never come at the cost of the ultimate sacrifice, even when attending a political rally,” Landry said in a written statement. “Mr. Comperatore is a hero, and Louisiana is proud to honor him today and every day for his selfless acts.”

Comperatore’s funeral is also being held on Thursday in Pennsylvania.
