Grand Forks man held in federal custody for alleged illegal firearm possession

Jul. 24—GRAND FORKS — A Grand Forks man faces potential time in federal prison for alleged illegal possession of a firearm.

Raymond Lee Graham Jr., 36,

was originally charged with five crimes in Grand Forks County.

He had been pulled over and fled on foot from police, who found 1.2 pounds of marijuana, seven grams of marijuana coated in what appeared to be methamphetamine, empty baggies, fake urine and a box of 18 THC vape pens inside his vehicle, according to court documents.

A firearm was allegedly located on Graham himself.

The case was filed in district court on June 5. It was dismissed on July 19 after Graham was indicted in federal court.

He is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, due to his criminal background of attempted robbery, robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the indictment.

The crime has a maximum penalty of 15 years' imprisonment.

A detention hearing was held Wednesday morning, July 24.

Graham requested to be released to live with his significant other, but given the current charge and his prior record, the judge found that residential placement would be "the least restrictive alternative to confinement that would reasonably ensure the safety of other persons and the community," according to court documents.

The judge ordered Graham to remain in custody until a residential re-entry placement became available for him.

A jury trial is currently scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 24.
