Group of men pull off $20,000 theft at Evans Walmart, authorities investigating

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a nearly $20,000 theft took place last week at the Evans Walmart on Washington Road.

Deputies responded to Walmart on Thursday after an employee reviewing register logs found a register was $9,000 short, according to an incident report.

The employee said she reviewed camera footage and saw three men at the register between 5:45 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to the report. The men selected multiple electronic items and while attempting to pay with cash, distracted the cashier and pocketed the money.

Deputies noted the theft occurred over three transactions, leaving the store missing $9,000 in cash and more than $10,600 in electronics merchandise, according to the report.
