Man killed, Fort Pierce Police officer wounded in shooting

FORT PIERCE — A man who pointed a weapon at police was killed and a city police officer wounded early Sunday at a Hutchinson Island condominium after an emergency call about an armed burglary, police said.

Just before 6 a.m. Sunday, Fort Pierce Police officers went to a home at 1166 Bayshore Drive after the 911 call that an armed burglary was in progress. Officers noted that the door was ajar, pushed it open, and announced themselves, police said.

An armed man appeared after several announcements and pointed a weapon at the officers. They were forced to fire their guns in response, Fort Pierce Police said.

The suspect was wounded in the gunfire and taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he later died. An officer also was wounded and treated for a non-life-threatening injury, police said.
