What happened to the convicted murderer who escaped Chester County Prison? The details
The man at the center of a nearly two-week-long manhunt in Pennsylvania and surrounding states in 2023 has been sentenced to at least 15 additional years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to his prison escape, according to Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry.
Danelo Souza Cavalcante made headlines last year after escaping from Chester County Prison by "crab-walking" up and over the prison's wall. The 34-year-old was sentenced to life in prison without parole two weeks earlier for murdering his ex-girlfriend and was awaiting transfer to a state facility when he escaped.
Cavalcante was spotted at Longwood Gardens before his capture, leading to local schools and businesses closing out of safety fears. He was ultimately caught on Sept. 13, 2023, in a wooded area in Chester County.
WHAT HAPPENED: Danelo Cavalcante has been captured. A look at the weeks leading up to it
“I commend the immense effort of the hundreds of troopers, officers, and agents who worked tirelessly to bring (Cavalcante) into custody," Henry said.
Cavalcante pleaded guilty to charges including two residential burglaries, theft of a car and a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. His sentence for these crimes will last between 15 and 30 years, according to the Attorney General's Office, and will be served consecutively to his existing life sentence.
