Former President Jimmy Carter is the oldest living former president at 99 years old.

A spokesperson for the Carter Center, a global charity founded by Carter and his late wife, Rosalynn, told USA TODAY on July 23 that Carter was still alive, debunking a social media rumor.

Carter has been receiving hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia since Feb. 18, 2023.

The former president battled several health issues, including skin cancer melanoma which eventually spread to his liver and brain, at which time he decided against any more medical treatments.

Carter continues to defy the odds to survive after 17 months in hospice, but the end is near, his eldest grandson, Jason Carter said this spring.

In a recent June interview with Southern Living, Jason Carter said his grandfather's health hadn't changed much as he was "no longer awake every day in his hospice journey" and that he was “experiencing the world as best he can as he continues through this process.”

James Earl Carter Jr. served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He was married for 77 years to Rosalyn Carter, before she passed away on Nov. 19, 2023.
