What happens to NYC affordable housing lottery units when someone moves out?
NEW YORK (PIX11) — New Yorkers enter New York City’s affordable housing lottery each year by the thousands, hoping to get selected for a new place to live.
The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development assisted in putting 15,000 households into affordable units this calendar year, according to an HPD spokesperson. But what happens when people move out of affordable units they won in a lottery through the NYC Housing Connect?
A spokesperson from the HPD said that New Yorkers who are interested in re-rentals can signify their interest through their Housing Connect profile by filling out the “housing choices” section. The re-rentals are not advertised on the portal, and setting up your profile is the only way to ensure that you will be notified by Housing Connect when a unit becomes available.
According to its website, the New York City Housing Development Corporation also advertises re-rentals in HDC-financed developments. Currently, there are nine low-income re-rentals and nine middle-income re-rentals. For more information on HDC re-rentals, click here.
