Haverstraw cops searching nationwide and overseas for teenager connected to fatal shooting

HAVERSTRAW — The police search for an 18-year-old man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of Christen Alvarado has expanded across the country and outside the United States.

Police suspect Yandie Martinez of Haverstraw shot the 29-year-old Alvarado on July 1 as he drove, causing the Pomona resident to crash his vehicle into a parked car opposite 9 Fairmount Ave. Officers responding to reports of gunfire removed Alvarado from the vehicle as EMS provided medical aid.

Alvarado was later pronounced dead at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. He had been shot multiple times in his torso area, police said.

The shooting was not random, Police Chief John Gould said. Alvarado and Martinez knew one another, but what led to the shooting remains unclear, Gould said.

"We do not have a motive for the homicide at this point," Gould said Wednesday. "We do not know what they were feuding about. We have heard many theories but nothing that can be confirmed."

Finding Martinez has not been successful.

"We are following multiple leads from multiple sources that range from multiple locations in the United States, locations overseas, and locations in Haverstraw," Gould said.

Police describe Martinez on a wanted poster as 6 feet, 170 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes, and tattoos on his neck and forearm. Martinez is considered armed and dangerous.

Gould didn't release how the police centered on Martinez during the investigation.

The shooting Monday marked the fourth homicide in Rockland in 2024. The others occurred in Stony Point, Spring Valley, and Ramapo. Rockland police investigated four homicides in 2023.
