Hear how Grand Junction residents are spending Fourth of July

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Grand Junction residents are hitting the road, visiting friends and family and celebrating Independence Day.

Regional Director for Public Affairs for AAA Colorado Skylar McKinley says they expect this year’s Fourth of July travel to be record-breaking.

“We are seeing around 71 million Americans traveling over the Fourth of July travel period. That’s the most we’ve ever seen in our data.”

Grand Junction resident Cesar Camacho is one of the 71 million traveling today and will join the 60.6 million traveling by car. He tells WesternSlopeNow how he plans on using his holiday.

“I’m planning on going and visiting my family down in Hotchkiss. They’re over at Cherry Days in Paonia. So, I’m going to go visit them and see the festival.”

But while millions are hitting the road, some of us like Matthew Martinez are staying home and making plans with friends and family.

“(I’m) going to go visit my parents for about an hour then afterwards going to the Jackalopes with my fiancé. We’re going to sit on the first baseline. Hopefully, get a foul ball or two, that would be super cool to get.”

Regardless of what you choose to do this holiday, be sure to stay safe and celebrate responsibly.

Happy Fourth of July!
