After heat waves and thunderstorms, NYC to finally get sunny, temperate weekend

The clouds are finally parting this weekend as forecasters predict New York City and its surrounding regions will see sunny and temperate conditions — a rarity so far this season.

Temperatures are expected to hover in the mid-to-high 80s from Friday through Sunday, with a low of around 70 degrees in the evenings, according to The Weather Channel.

Mostly sunny skies each day, with scattered clouds and light winds, are also anticipated. City residents can get excited for some breezy and picturesque park days as the humidity is looking to be in the reasonable 40-50% range. (See our Things to Do page for more outdoor activity options.)

The welcome weather news comes amid an unusually hot beginning to summer in NYC, as well as across the country.

New Yorkers have managed their way through three serious heat waves already this season. The most recent one came on July 15 as temps hit the 90s and felt like the triple digits, with high humidity only worsening the situation.

Cooling stations were opened throughout the city, while the Parks Department touted its array of “water feature locations.”

During the heat wave, roughly 100 million people were under heat alerts along the East Coast, in potentially deadly conditions.

Last year, 350 New York residents died prematurely from preventable heat-related conditions, and over 2,300 people in the country died from excessive heat, according to data from the CDC.

But it’s not only the skyrocketing temperatures which have been plaguing the U.S. this summer.

An unusually high number of tornadoes and storms, including in upstate New York, have reportedly caused a total of $25.1 billion worth of damage nationwide, according to a tally from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
