Helicopter hits powerline and crashes in Schuylkill County

HEGINS TOWNSHIP, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A helicopter crash is under investigation. After a pilot spraying crops in Schuylkill County went down Friday afternoon.

More than 400 people in Heigns Township were without power because of the helicopter crash.

That includes the owner of the farm who saw the whole thing happen.

This helicopter circles the miller corn field spraying crops in Hegins Township along Wood Lane Friday afternoon.

It quickly gets lower to the ground and takes what appears to be a nose dive right into the field.

“You just saw a pop it hit the wire and the wire burst and then he had it pretty under control until he got just about down and then it went sideways and then the rotor hit and then after that, it was over,” said Bruce Miller the owner of Miller’s Farm.

3 detained after suspicious bank transactions and chase

The chopper hit a power line before crashing into the corn field causing a power outage that affected hundreds in the area.

The pilot was the only person on board and was not injured.

“I went down to see if he was okay to go down and get him out. He was good. Not even a scratch he said no scratches no nothing he was lucky,” says Miller.

Miller says a new fungus was threatening his crops and this was the first time anyone has had to spray over the 20-plus acre farm.

“The guy was really good he sprayed everything all the way down from the valley so far and he was doing a good job but this one time I don’t know what happened,” stated Miller.

Miller says it was startling to witness. What he calls a freak accident.

“It was overwhelming. You don’t want to see anything like this happen to anybody,” added Miller.

Right now the power has been restored and the FAA will be investigating the crash.
