Here's when the new SuperFresh supermarket in Highland Park is expected to open
HIGHLAND PARK – Plans for the opening of the new SuperFresh supermarket on Raritan Avenue are still several weeks away.
The store opening is targeted for around the Labor Day holiday weekend, according to a borough official.
No official grand opening has been announced, although the new SuperFresh sign on the building has been up for some time.
Last December Mayor Elsie Foster announced SuperFresh, which has existing Central Jersey stores in the Hopelawn section of Woodbridge, Linden and Middlesex Borough, would be opening at the site of the former Stop & Shop on Raritan Avenue.
The borough's longtime Stop & Shop closed in March 2023 after the chain decided not to renew its lease, a decision that was announced in 2022. The Stop & Shop was the main supermarket in the community of about 15,000 residents.
Earlier this month Stop & Shop announced plans to close two of its stores in Edison, one in Piscataway and one in Franklin, for underperforming. The four Central Jersey stores are among 10 Stop & Shop stores in New Jersey closing this year.
Getting a new supermarket in Highland Park was a top priority for borough officials following the store's closing.
Since SuperFresh took over the Highland Park store, the building has been under renovations in preparation for the opening.
While awaiting the opening of the new supermarket, the borough has helped arrange transportation to supermarkets in nearby communities and even helped residents looking to place online orders for groceries.
In addition, small stores in town, like Park Deli, Krauszer's and a Kosher supermarket, have all stepped up to provide extra products and produce to fill the gap, borough officials have said.
