Hey Muskingum County: Here's what you need to know to start your week

ZANESVILLE − The Zanesville Daybreak Rotary Club has announced Julie MacLaine as its new president. She's passionate about education and young adults. MacLaine has been the coordinator of community relations and donor engagement at Zane State College for 15 years.

The club is involved in various local projects, including the Miracle League of Muskingum Valley Ohio, Habitat for Humanity, annual veterans parade, Tools for Schools and projects such as providing local students with the Rotary 4-Way Test competition and honoring local teachers and student musicians of the year. Many of these projects wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community participating in fundraisers like Rotary Roses, 12 Days of Christmas and the Rotary Daybreak Foundation Derby Auction.

ADAMSVILLE − Mariah Alwes of Adamsville has been awarded $1,000 from the Tractor Supply Company Foundation for her business, Star Shine Farm, via the Farmer Veteran Coalition's Fellowship Fund. The program awards grants to veteran farmers to purchase items that will make a crucial difference in the launch of their businesses.

Star Shine Farm harvests lumber through conventional methods for high-quality furniture construction. Alwes works with Amish artisans and the local timber industry to sell products, while working on a master’s degree in natural resource management at the University of Idaho. With these funds, she plans to replant native hardwoods on her farm, with the goal of establishing a self-sustaining forest that can be sustainably harvested over the next 50 years. Mariah joined the Air Force in 2004 and is currently stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as a reserve officer.

ZANESVILLE − The Genesis Pulmonary/Critical Care team recently introduced a Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction program using the Zephyr Endobronchial Valve. It is a minimally invasive procedure that implants tiny valves in parts of the diseased lung to allow trapped air to escape, making it easier for patients to breathe. Doctors Jacob Hupp and Dany Abou Abdallah are trained to perform the procedure.

Eligible patients have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or emphysema, trouble breathing while on medication and reduced lung function. Benefits of the procedure include avoiding major lung surgeries and breathing easier with improved quality of life.

ZANESVILLE − The Budweiser Clydesdales will be making two appearances upcoming locally, plus additional times for the public to see the famous spokehorses, as part of the 14th anniversary celebration of Folds of Honor.

Appearances will be at 3:30 p.m. July 18 at "Strings and Salutes – Honoring Our Heroes" at Secrest Auditorium, 334 Shinnick St., and 1 p.m. July 20 for the Veterans Appreciation Foundation at the Muskingum County Fairgrounds, 1300 Pershing Road. The Strings and Salutes appearance will be preceded by parade of the horses over the Y-Bridge. Both events will feature a Folds of Honor scholarship check presentation.

The Clydesdales can also be visited at the Muskingum County Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 19, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 7 p.m. July 20, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. July 21 and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 22 and 23.

NEW CONCORD − Sisterhood ReCoded will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 29 to Aug. 2 at Muskingum University. It's free for those ages 10 to 15 with lunch provided. The camp teaches students how to code mobile apps. In groups of up to three. Students will identify a problem and create a mobile application to address it using an online drag and drop programming tool. Register at sisterhood.zone.

ZANESVILLE − The Muskingum County Adult and Child Protective Services will have a board meeting at 5 p.m. Aug. 1 at the board office, 205 N. Seventh St.

ZANESVILLE − The Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority will meet in regular session at 10 a.m. July 17 at the Welcome Center, 205 N. Fifth St.

ZANESVILLE − The Zanesville Metropolitan Housing Authority will have a regular board meeting at 5:15 p.m. July 25 at the board office, 407 Pershing Road.
