Notorious outlaws Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Elizabeth Parker, aka Bonnie and Clyde, escape capture after a posse ambushes them and their gang near Dexter, west of Des Moines in Dallas County, where they have holed up while on the run from authorities. The Des Moines Tribune, the sister afternoon paper of the Register, reports on July 24, 1933, about the ambush and their escape, though Barrow's fatally wounded brother and his wife are captured. A Polk County sheriff's deputy suffers a minor head wound. The fugitive couple, themselves wounded, escape in a series of stolen cars and defy another ambush to get away. Less than a year later, both are shot dead in yet another ambush in Louisiana.

Each day this month, as the Register marks its 175th birthday, we’re sharing front pages from noteworthy moments in history.
