‘History is repeating itself’: Family speaks after missing NC woman found dead in Edmond

EDMOND, Okla. (KFOR) — A chilling murder in Edmond has family members of the victim asking questions. Elyse Betz was found dead at a storage facility on July 5. Police arrested Kyle Fedus in connection to the murder. Now, the family said her death feels like history is repeating itself in their family.

In 1991, Betz’s aunt was killed by her then-husband, also at a storage facility, which they said makes the news of Betz’s passing even more shocking.

“He took away a lot from us and I don’t think he should ever see that outside of those four walls,” said Laura Beckman, Betz’s younger sister.

A 911 call caused time to stop for the family of Betz.

They said she was a successful woman with a love for horses and very admired in her family.

“I wanted to be just like her when I grew up,” said Betz.

Last Friday afternoon, Edmond Police found her body at Coltrane Mini Storage.

Her sister, who lives out of state, called a detective and asked to put the call on speaker so family could hear.

The detective told her something that made her think something was definitely wrong.

“He’s like, ‘if you think that’s a good idea.’ And at that point, I kind of sat in that as this is happening like this, I think I know what this call was about,” said Beckman.

Betz’s older sister said she felt all sorts of emotions as communication with Betz had been nonexistent for weeks.

“We knew she had gone missing around June 15th out of North Carolina,” said Beckman. “I had been talking to the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service and local police trying to locate her just because it wasn’t like her to fall off the grid. Her Facebook was gone. Her phone was turned off.”

The shocking call from detectives was the first clue of where she might be, but the family still is confused.

“She was the most successful one out of all of us. So it’s it’s just not sitting well with me,” said Beckman.

Edmond Police arrested Kyle Fedus at a nearby hotel in connection to the murder.

Police said he has an outstanding federal warrant in North Carolina.

The affidavit explains the pair went to Oklahoma to hide from law enforcement and came up with a plan if they were caught.

“He ended up confessing to a pact he had with this female where they would both take their own lives outside this storage facility. That’s his side of the story. Of course we don’t have hers,” said Emily Ward with Edmond Police.

According to court records, Fedus injected Betz first and then himself with a pre-made syringe of fentanyl and meth.

“When we were all told that drugs were involved, we couldn’t believe it. Elyse… That wasn’t her,” said Beckman.

Now, the main focus for Betz’s family is on the man they believe took the bright light in their lives.

“I want him to spend the rest of his life in jail thinking about what he did to my sister,” said Beckman.

Edmond Police said the relationship between Fedus and Betz is unknown, but they were both staying together at a Best Western in Edmond.

Fedus is in the Oklahoma County Jail on a $10,000,000 bond.
