Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise, the majority leader in the U.S. House, qualified for reelection Wednesday for the 1st Congressional District.

Scalise, a Republican who along with Speaker Mike Johnson of Shreveport gives Louisiana the most powerful one-two punch in Congress, qualified by proxy at the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge.

Scalise is attending the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Though Scalise is a heavy favorite for reelection, he drew two challengers Wednesday.

Randall Arrington, a Republican from Ponchatoula, and Mel Manuel, a Democrat from Madisonville, also joined the race.

Qualifying for the Nov. 5 election continues through Friday.
