Hudsonville woman who ordered dog to bite man gets jail time, probation

HUDSONVILLE — A local woman received jail time and probation after pleading no contest to aggravated domestic assault for allegedly ordering her dog to bite a man in May.

Augustina Villarreal, 37, of Hudsonville, was sentenced to 75 days in the Ottawa County Jail and will serve 12 months' probation. Villarreal was sentenced Tuesday, July 2, in 58th District Court before Judge Judith Mulder.

Villarreal also must pay $860. She received credit for time served.

Villarreal pled no contest on June 21 to aggravated domestic assault (a misdemeanor). She was originally charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (a felony). A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing.

Deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded around 1:55 a.m. May 25 to Chestnut Court in Hudsonville. A man covered in blood had arrived at a neighbor’s home asking for help after being bitten by a dog, according to OCSO.

Investigation showed the 41-year-old man lived nearby and was involved in a domestic argument with Villarreal. During the argument, Villarreal ordered her dog to attack the man and he suffered numerous injuries to both arms. He told police he got away from the dog, escaped through a window and sought help.

The man was treated by Life EMS Ambulance and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
