Isolated tornadoes, thunderstorms in forecast as Hurricane Beryl remnants enter Ohio
Remnants of Hurricane Beryl could bring weak, isolated tornadoes to Columbus, according to a hazardous weather outlook issued early Tuesday by the National Weather Service in Wilmington.
Models project Beryl, now a tropical depression with a maximum windspeed of 35 mph, will pass Northeast over parts of Ohio Wednesday. The storm killed at least four people when it touched down on the Texas coastline Monday as a Category 1 hurricane. More than 2 million people are without power in the region, and Texas officials warn it could take days to restore power.
Beryl is the earliest recorded storm in a hurricane season to reach Category 5 status. It’s also the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. Abnormally warm ocean waters contributed to the storm’s fast growth, meteorologists say. The storm devastated islands throughout parts of the Caribbean.
How will Hurricane Beryl remnants impact central Ohio weather?
The NWS said on Twitter that the remnants should arrive in Ohio Tuesday, and effects could continue into the night. A few storms are possible in the afternoon, followed by a bigger line of storms later in the evening, with gusty winds, brief isolated tornadoes, and heavy rain possible.
