Ice cream is serious business on the SouthCoast, winning top readership last week

As we head into a new week, let's take a look at the news from this past week.

Coast Line Transfers, or CLT Marine, is one of the seven firms seeking to become part of the New Bedford State Pier's redevelopment. CLT is a commercial marine service provider to the expanding offshore wind industry, as well as the marine industry in the Northeast. CLT, which is operating from the State Pier now, proposes the use of existing Buildings 1 and 2, including about 2.3 acres of pier space in all.

Smashed which opened in early Juneis bringing the LA vibe to New Bedford. Their menu has smashed burgers, hot chicken, mac and cheese, milkshakes, and more surrounded by a unique atmosphere. The restaurant is keeping up with Sarducci's legacy, Smashed is open until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, one of the last businesses to close in the downtown area.

Ice cream, you scream, and in honor of National Ice Cream Day this past Sunday, SouthCoast Today invited readers to "scream" their vote for their favorite Ice Cream spot in an online poll.

And the winner was Captain Bonney's Creamery at 258 New Bedford Road, Rochester.

"Feeling really, really blessed to have won. Our goal at Captain Bonney's is to make everyone's experience a really good one," said owner Amber Romero.

New Bedford woman faces charge related to newborn baby found dead at Fort Taber Park

A 22-year-old New Bedford woman has been arraigned in the case of “Baby Doe,” a male infant found dead at Fort Taber Park in December.

Daniela Michell Escobar-Mejia, the infant’s mother, faces a single charge of improper disposal of a body. She was arraigned in New Bedford District Court and released on personal recognizance.

The Qumseya family that owns the new Hyper Zone indoor playground opening soon at the Dartmouth Mall understands that it’s not always easy for children to find a clean, safe place to play.

The play areas include an obstacle course, crawling tubes and multiple slides. They decided against installing a trampoline for safety’s sake.

They will also have a separate area for toddlers with interactive games they can play.

Dartmouth man charged with viewing child porn, trying to buy sex with child on plane

State troopers were at Logan International Airport earlier this month to arrest a Dartmouth man upon arrival, after a fellow passenger reported seeing “disturbing” images and videos of prepubescent children, among other things, while in view of the man’s phone during a flight from Nashville, according to the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office.

Jed Cohen, 74, of Dartmouth, was ordered held on $10,000 bail at his arraignment on Wednesday, July 17, in Boston Municipal Court on charges of possession of child pornography, disseminating photographs of sexual or intimate parts of a child and paying for sexual conduct with a child under 18, according to a release from the DA.
