Illinois man who was killed in fireworks accident has been identified

The LaSalle County coroner has identified the man killed early Friday morning after a fireworks accident north of Ottawa and LaSalle.

Chance W. Ruger, 25, died at OSF HealthCare St. Elizabeth Medical Center after he sustained injuries from fireworks at a home at 3073 East 12th Street in rural Wallace Township. An autopsy was conducted Friday, according to Coroner Rich Ploch.

Law enforcement responded to the scene at 12:25 a.m. Friday, where they found Ruger seriously injured and transported him to St. Elizabeth, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Ruger's obituary, published by Ottawa Funeral Home, said that Ruger was a outdoor enthusiast who loved traveling to nearby Starved Rock State Park and fishing. He also enjoyed traveling with friends and family, going to places like Washington, D.C., San Francisco, New Orleans and the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. At the time of his death, he was working as a security guard for Allied Universal Security Systems.

A funeral service has been set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at Ottawa Funeral Home, with Deacon Ron Wackerlin of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marseilles set to preside over the ceremony. A visitation is scheduled for 11 a.m. that morning at the funeral home.

The coroner and the LaSalle County Sheriff's Office are continuing to investigate the cause of the incident.
