Imported chicken recalled for listeria contamination

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Al-Safa US LLC has issued a recall for approximately 2,010 pounds of imported frozen ready-to-eat chicken products that could potentially be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the FDA announced on Monday.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service discovered the contamination during routine product testing, and the results indicated the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The following recalled products were produced in Canada on June 5, 2024, and entered the U.S. on June 13 and June 21. The products are labeled with establishment number 866 in the Canadian mark of inspection and were shipped to retailers nationwide:

  • 12.1-oz. cardboard box package containing “Al Safa Halal Charcoal Grilled Chicken Seekh Kebab Grilled, Minced, Chicken Patty Kebab” with “NOV 30 25” and “0605404” printed on a sticker on the outside of the package.

  • 14.11-oz. cardboard box package containing “Al Safa Halal Fully Cooked Chicken Chapli Kebab Seasoned Chicken Patty” with “NOV 30 25” and “0605416” printed on a sticker on the outside of the package.

There have been no confirmed reports of illness or reactions related to the consumption of these products at this time.

Infection with Listeria monocytogenes can cause symptoms of nausea, vomiting, aches, fever, and diarrhea. The bacteria has the potential to spread to the nervous system, including the brain, which can result in meningitis or other potentially fatal illnesses. The infection also poses a high risk for pregnancies, as it can result in miscarriage.

The FDA says that children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are more vulnerable to infection.

If you are in possession of some of these recalled products, the FDA is advising the public to not consume them and to instead throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
