Residents gathered at the American Revolution Memorial for the ceremony. A bugler played the national anthem and taps, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and the McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard presented the colors.

Soldiers were recognized for continuing the fight for our nation’s independence.

“This, to me, is the perfect place to have a Fourth of July celebration or Independence Day celebration because there were so many lives lost, so much blood was shed to achieve that independence so many years ago and really the work and the sweat and tears and blood that has been shed since then to maintain that independence we achieved so many years ago,” retired Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps Richard Lewallen, Topeka, said.
