President Joe Biden has ended his reelection campaign less than a month before the Democratic National Convention. What does that mean for Indiana's Democratic delegates, who were elected last weekend to nominate Biden for president?

Here’s what to know.

How many Democratic delegates does Indiana have?

Out of the 3,896 delegates nationally, Indiana has 88. This number comes from a Democratic bylaws formula, which is based on each state’s population and percentage of the total Democratic vote.

Do Indiana delegates have to vote for Biden?

Joe Biden won the Democratic presidential nomination in Indiana’s primary elections on May 7. However, Indiana Democrats don’t technically have to vote for Biden, thanks to a “good conscience” clause in Democratic delegate selection rules.

Rule 13(J) states that “delegates elected to the national convention pledged to a presidential candidate shall in all good conscience reflect the sentiments of those who elected them.” It’s existed since the 1980s, but has never affected a nomination.

Sam Barloga, communications director for the Indiana Democratic Party, said last week that Indiana’s delegates will throw their support to Biden.

“(Indiana delegates) are all pledged to Joe Biden based on the results of the Indiana Democratic Primary where the President received 100% of the vote. They are committed to the President unless something changes,” Barloga wrote in an email to the IndyStar.

Biden dropping out of the race would presumably qualify as something changing.

Who are Indiana's Democratic delegates?

The Indiana Democratic Party has not finalized its delegation yet. That decision is expected soon.
