Indiana politicians were quick to react after President Joe Biden announced Sunday afternoon that he will not seek reelection, bowing to weeks of increasing pressure from high-ranking Democrats.

U.S. Rep. Jim Banks, Indiana's GOP candidate for U.S. Senate, joined other Republicans who are calling for Biden to resign immediately if he is unable to run for a second term. If he doesn't, Banks tweeted, he should be removed under the 25th Amendment, which covers what happens if a president is unfit to serve.

Congressman Rudy Yakym (R-2) echoed Bank’s statement, also calling for Biden's resignation, and said Vice President Kamala Harris, the most likely new Democratic candidate who received Biden's endorsement, “orchestrated a conspiracy to hide Joe Biden’s cognitive decline.”

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, who kept a low profile at the Republican National Convention last week, made a plug for Hoosiers to vote for Republicans up and down the ticket in November.

"Let's be clear — every Indiana Democrat has the same policies as Joe Biden," he posted on X. "They are for open borders, inflationary spending, and woke ideology."

On the Democratic side, Indiana native Ron Klain, Biden's former chief of staff, jumped in to back Harris: "Now that the donors and electeds have pushed out the only candidate who has ever beaten Trump, it’s time to end the political fantasy games and unite behind the only veteran of a national campaign — our outstanding VP Kamala Harris!!"

Democratic U.S. Rep. Andrè Carson of Indianapolis said he was proud of the work of the Biden administration and that the party stands ready for the election season.

Republican U.S. Rep. Larry Bucshon, who's not running for reelection in the 8th Congressional District, struck a much less political tone than most in his party, saying Biden made the right call to step aside and thanking the president for his long years in civil service.
