Founded in the Netherlands, ING began operating under its current name in 1991 when Nationale-Nederlanden and NMB Postbank Group merged. ING entered the U.S. banking market in 2000 with ING Direct.
Unlike many other big commercial banks, ING Direct's business model relies primarily on Internet banking for its more than 7.5 million American customers. While the bank is founded on using Web-based banking, ING Direct does have seven regional "Cafe" locations where customers can browse the Internet and talk to ING Direct representatives about different account options. The bank offers free access at more than 35,000 ATMs throughout the country.

ING Direct's electronic banking model comes with savings and checking accounts that carry higher interest rates than many other big national consumer banks. The Electric Orange Checking Account APY ranges from 0.25 percent to 1.25 percent while the Orange Savings Account carries a 1.10 percent APY.
