Injured teen hiker rescued from Appalachian Trail near Caratunk

Jul. 6—Stormy weather didn't stop county and state emergency crews from rescuing a 14-year-old girl who was injured Friday while hiking the Appalachian Trail near the town of Caratunk.

The Somerset County Sheriff's Office received a call Friday afternoon about a hiker in distress at a point on the trail west of Caratunk, between Pierce Pond and the Kennebec River, said Mark Latti, spokesman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.

Despite reports of heavy rain and a flash flood warning, the sheriff's office, Maine Warden Service and Maine Forest Service assembled a team to respond, Latti said.

"While on the way in, the weather cleared enough for the Maine Forest Service to fly in with a helicopter and airlift her out," he said.

The rescued hiker's name and condition were unavailable late Saturday.
