SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – This week on Inside Utah Politics, Utah hasn’t moved on from the primary election while the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is moving on from the status quo.

Our first guest is Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera. Her office has separated from Unified Police and has reestablished law enforcement operations in addition to running the jail. Rivera discusses her initial opposition to the plan, how she came around to embrace it, and how her office has navigated the transition. Rivera also talks about modern policing and how the concepts of empathy and respect are practiced in the context of law enforcement.

More records expected to shatter as long-running blanket of heat threatens 130 million in U.S.

Utah elections officials are preparing to certify election results. As that process plays out, one candidate is crying foul: Phil Lyman. The legislator-turned-gubernatorial candidate hasn’t caught up to the incumbent Spencer Cox, the projected winner. Lyman has not conceded the race. Instead, he’s calling for an independent third party to examine the results. ABC4’s Jordan Tracy talked to Lyman and a political scientist.

President Joe Biden has had a bad week. After his debate performance led to more questions about his health and mental capacity, calls have grown louder for him to exit the race. Competing ideas within the party are causing tension that threatens to upend its plans for November.

While Democrats scramble to control the damage, President Biden has announced new measures meant to protect Americans from the ravages of extreme weather. All of that is happening as extreme heat is building in the West, while a warm Atlantic Ocean fueled a devastating hurricane in the Caribbean.
