How Iowa child labor laws conflict with federal laws

Governor Kim Reynolds is challenging the U.S. Department of Labor over fines she says
could force Iowa small businesses to close.

The department fined seven Iowa restaurants more than $500,000 because of child labor violations. State law allows 14- and 15-year-olds to work until 9:00 p.m. during the school year. Federal law limits work hours to 7:00 p.m. One lawmaker says the Iowa Restaurant Association is partly to blame for guidance the organization gave to businesses.
