New Jersey cemetery worker killed in wood-chipper accident

A 22-year-old cemetery worker died Wednesday in New Jersey in an accident involving a wood-chipper.

Police were called around 6:20 p.m. to the St. Magdalen Cemetery in Flemington, where they discovered Eonias Mateo-Perez. He was declared dead at the scene, the Hunterdon County prosecutor’s office said.

He suffered fatal injuries “while operating tree-chipping equipment,” according to officials.

The prosecutor’s office and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the incident, though it’s considered an accident and no foul play is suspected.

OSHA said the man was an employee of William LaRue Services, which has no history of violations with the agency.

Flemington is a borough located about 25 miles west of New Brunswick.
