(The Hill) — First lady Jill Biden and former first lady Melania Trump spoke on Sunday afternoon following the shooting at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania.

The first lady’s office confirmed to The Hill that the two women spoke after Melania Trump released a statement earlier on Sunday, calling the attack on her husband “heinous” and saying that “political games are inferior to love.

The former first lady has hardly attended any public campaign events with her husband, but she is expected to appear during the GOP convention in Wisconsin this week.

The first ladies’ phone call followed a phone call on Saturday night between President Joe Biden and Trump. The president later said he had a good talk with his political rival.

“I’m sincerely grateful that he’s doing well and recovering. We had a short but good conversation,” Biden said on Sunday. He added that he and the first lady are keeping Trump and his family in his prayers.

A 20-year-old gunman fired shots into a Trump campaign rally on Saturday, with one bullet grazing the former president’s ear. The shooter, identified by the FBI as Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pa., targeted the rally from a nearby rooftop.

Biden’s campaign suspended communications on Saturday after the shooting and plans to start them back up on Monday night, a campaign official told The Hill.
