With President Joe Biden’s recent withdrawal from the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris has taken his endorsement and run with it, garnering support from a majority of Democratic delegates.

The upheaval comes nearly three months after the Indiana primary election, where Biden ran and won in an uncontested Democratic primary. With just over 100 days until Election Day, here’s what voters should know about what they'll see on ballots in November:

Will Biden’s name still appear on Indiana ballots?

Because Biden dropped out of the race before he was certified as the party's nominee, his name won’t appear on the ballot in November, despite winning Indiana’s primary. Instead, whoever delegates choose as his successor at the Democratic National Convention will be on the ballot, according to the Indiana Secretary of State’s 2024 Candidate Guide.

Nominees must be certified by the chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party before Sept. 10.

Will Kamala Harris automatically be on the ballot in Indiana instead?

Indiana Democratic delegates voted last night to unanimously endorse Harris as their party’s nominee, joining a wave of support among Democratic party leaders.

“It's amazing how much energy and excitement and unity there is right now. People are really excited for her,” Indianapolis City-County Council member and DNC delegate Nick Roberts said. “There's just a lot of people trying to support her however they can, and I think endorsing her as an Indiana delegation is one way of doing so.”

However, if another candidate enters the race, Indiana delegates don’t have to choose Harris as of now. They remain unpledged until the DNC gives formal guidance on the nominating process, Indiana Democratic Party spokesperson Sam Barloga said.

Indiana delegates make up only 88 of the nearly 4,000 total Democratic leaders choosing who the party’s presidential candidate will be. If Harris gets majority support, which she currently appears to have with no other candidates in the race, she’ll appear on the ballot.

When does Harris have to announce her VP pick?

The Democratic ticket, which includes candidates for both president and vice president, has to be finalized by Sept. 10. Democrats will likely select both candidates at the DNC, planned for Aug. 19-22 in Chicago.

Several potential vice presidential candidates have been floated, including former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg. Buttigieg ran for president alongside both Harris and Biden in 2020 and he currently serves as the Biden administration’s transportation secretary.

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Mike Schmuhl grew up with Buttigieg and worked on several of his campaigns, including his 2020 campaign for president.

“He's a great leader, he has a lot of empathy, he's a fantastic communicator,” Schmul said. “He's smart, he's young, he's driven and charismatic. There's all those things that are going for him.”

Other names floated include Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Who else will be on the ballot?

Donald Trump won Indiana’s Republican primary and will appear on the ballot alongside his vice presidential nominee and U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance, who was confirmed at the Republican National Convention earlier in July.

Third party presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will also appear on Indiana ballots in November. The politician gathered over 46,000 approved signatures, beating the requirement to appear on the ballot by more than 9,000 signatures.
