Joshua teen dies after leading police on high-speed chase in Lubbock County
Sep. 9—SLATON — A 16-year-old male from Joshua was pronounced dead on Sunday morning after he attempting to evade arrest on U.S. Highway 87.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that at about 7 a.m., a Garza County Sheriff's Office deputy conducted a routine traffic stop on U.S. Highway 84 at Southland in Garza County.
The car being driven was a 2018 Hyndai Sonata that had been reported stolen out of Burleson.
During the traffic stop, the driver tried to evade arrest using the stolen vehicle, exiting U.S. 84, east of Slaton.
"The driver was traveling at an unsafe speed, could not navigate a turnaround underneath an overpass and lost control of the vehicle," according to DPS reports. "The vehicle traveled off the roadway, struck a flatbed train car and caught fire."
Joshua ISD sent an email to parents informing them about the loss and said that the JISD counseling team will provide support for both students and staff.
"Please contact your counselor if you would like to talk to someone," the email read. "Our heartfelt prayers and thoughts go out to the family and community."
