Judge warns of jury duty scam in Wichita County

Thirtieth District Judge Jeff McKnight said Tuesday he has become aware some area residents have received phone calls telling them they missed jury duty, and a warrant was issued for their arrest.

The caller tells the person they must pay cash or some other form of nontraceable funds to avoid arrest, said McKnight, the Wichita County administrative judge.

The calls are a scam.

"First, a person will not be called about a warrant," McKnight said. "Second, a person will never be asked to pay cash, or similar funds, over the phone to avoid a warrant."

The calls are a variation of several scams in which residents are warned they'll be arrested if they don't pay.

The Identity Theft Resource Center, a nonprofit headquartered in California, identifies such calls as phishing scams, noting that legitimate authorities will not ask for cash.
