Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery. On this day in 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed 250,000 enslaved people across the state that they were free.

Juneteenth became an official federal holiday when President Joe Biden signed a bill on June 17, 2021.

It is not recognized as a state holiday in South Carolina.

Today, Juneteenth has become a time for communities to come together and reflect on the history of slavery in the United States and celebrate the progress made.

Will you be able to shop and buy groceries?

Most restaurants, grocery stores, and retail stores will remain open and operate during regular business hours.

According to their websites, businesses such as Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Publix, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Food Lion, Aldi, Kroger, Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Starbucks will remain open.

What's closed?

Juneteenth is a federal holiday, and most nonessential federal government employees will be off.

Will my bank be open?

According to these company websites, banks such as Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, CitiBank, and JPMorgan Chase will be closed on Juneteenth.

Will I get mail on Juneteenth?

There is no need to check the mailbox on Wednesday.

According to the United States Postal Service, the post office will be closed, and mail will not be delivered. Mail will resume on Thursday.

Is trash pickup happening on Juneteenth?

The City of Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson will pick up trash on normally scheduled hours.

Are SC county courthouses open?

Do you have any tickets that need to be paid or business that needs to be handled at the courthouse?

Anderson, Spartanburg, and Greenville county courthouse locations will be open.

Can you ship a package on Juneteenth?

If you need to ship or pick up a package, UPS will be open.

According to their website, UPS stores nationwide will be open.

That's not your only option; FedEx will also be open for business. According to FedEx's 2024 holiday schedule, all services will be available.

Are SC libraries open on Juneteenth?

Anderson, Greenville, and Spartanburg county libraries will be open.

Can you get a prescription refill on Juneteenth?

According to these companies, CVS, Walgreens, and urgent care centers will remain open on Juneteenth if you need to pick up medication or see a doctor.
