SANTA FE COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Jury selection in Alec Baldwin‘s trial for the deadly shooting at the “Rust” movie set in 2021 is set to begin on Tuesday in New Mexico.

Baldwin, who starred in and co-produced the movie, faces an involuntary manslaughter charge for the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. During rehearsal on “Rust” set near Santa Fe, Baldwin pointed a prop gun at Hutchins when the revolver fired and hit and killed Hutchins. Director Joel Souza was also struck by the bullet but survived his injuries.

Baldwin pleaded not guilty to the charge and claimed that he never pulled the trigger. He was originally charged in the shooting in 2023, but the charge was dropped. Baldwin’s attorneys have attempted to get the refiled charge dropped, however, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer rejected the motion to dismiss the case allowing the trial to proceed.

“Rust” movie armorer Hannah Gutierrez was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March for the death of Hutchins. Judge Marlowe Sommer sentenced Gutierrez to 18 months in prison in April. Gutierrez’s lawyers filed a notice of appeal in an attempt to overturn her conviction in May.

As reported by The Associated Press, the filming of “Rust” resumed but moved to Montana under an agreement with Hutchins’ husband, Matthew Hutchins, which made him an executive producer. The completed movie has not yet been released for public viewing.

Jury selection is set to begin on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the First Judicial District Court of New Mexico in Santa Fe.

Baldwin’s trial is expected to be livestreamed.
