Juveniles charged with stealing car, leading police chase from Hopewell to Petersburg

PETERSBURG – State police say a teenager arrested early Thursday following a car chase from Hopewell into Petersburg was also being sought for previous auto thefts.

The juvenile – a 14-year-old female – was caught after she allegedly led authorities on the pursuit that ended when the car hit a state-police cruiser on traffic control along Crater Road, state police spokesperson Matt Demlein said in an email. A 16-year-old passenger in the vehicle was also taken into custody.

It began when Prince George Police attempted to stop the vehicle for reckless driving. The driver refused to stop and kept going into Hopewell where that city’s police tried to stop the car.

At that point, a pursuit started west on state Route 36 into Petersburg, which was where state troopers became involved.

The chase ended when the car turned the wrong way onto Crater Road and hit the left front bumper of the state police car. The driver fled but was later tracked by police dogs.

She was initially taken to Bon Secours Southside Medical Center in Petersburg for treatment of injuries and then charged.

No one else was reported injured, including the trooper working the traffic control.

Demlein said the driver has been linked to prior auto thefts in Petersburg.

The investigation is continuing.
