President Joe Biden has dropped out of the presidential election race in November. What does this mean for Kamala Harris?

Vice President Kamala Harris is now considered the front runner for the upcoming election, but that can change.

The Democratic Convention is coming up on Aug. 19-22, when the party's 3,900 delegates will select and cast their votes for the party's new nominees for president and vice president.

If the vote doesn't produce a clear winner with majority of delegates, then the additional 700 superdelegates will also vote, and continue to vote until there is a winner.

Is Kamala Harris now the president?

Kamala Harris is not automatically president now.

The current vice president only becomes president if the sitting president becomes incapacitated or resigns the office. Biden has only said he’s leaving the race for the next four-year presidential term.

His Sunday statement about ending his campaign for a second term suggested he’s not leaving the office before his first term ends on Jan. 20, 2025, when the next president is sworn in.

He said instead of campaigning, he’ll “focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

There are several other contenders that are being floated as possible Democratic candidates. They include Josh Shapiro, governor of Pennsylvania, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Gavin Newsom of California.

Whoever the new nominee is, they also need to name a running mate.

Kamala Harris was Joe Biden’s running mate in 2020 and was, until Sunday, his running mate in the November election.
