Kamala Harris is running for president.

Today, shortly after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, the current vice president announced she will be joining the Democratic ticket.

“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris said in a statement. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win.” If successful, she will be the United States’ first female president.

In her statement, the vice president paid tribute to Biden’s “extraordinary leadership,” saying that he achieved more in one term than many presidents do in two. “With this selfless and patriotic act, President Biden is doing what he has done throughout his life of service: putting the American people and our country above everything else,” Harris said.

Her news to run for president comes after Biden issued a written statement on Sunday afternoon saying he believes it is in the country’s best interest that he step down from the race. He also thanked Harris for “being an extraordinary partner.” Biden’s decision follows weeks of scrutiny from fellow democrats, politicians, and voters, who have urged him to bow out of the reelection due to his age and seemingly declining health.

And while Biden’s original statement did not endorse a successor, he quickly took to social media to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as a Democratic nominee. “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” he concluded.

Allies of the VP have been quietly campaigning for her behind the scenes for months—even prior to Biden’s decision to drop out of the race—and polls show that Harris has a better chance against Trump than Biden did.

“Democrats—it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this,” Biden wrote in his endorsement of Harris. Time will tell if voters feel the same.
