Kansas father arrested after infant son’s autopsy showed methamphetamine intoxication

A Hays father has been arrested after an autopsy showed his infant son had methamphetamine in his system, officials say.

Abraham Duran Leon was arrested Monday on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with the death of his 5-month-old son, Fernando Leon III, according to the Hays Police Department.

Hays officers responded shortly after noon on April 2 to a report of a child not breathing at the Rodeway Inn. Ellis County EMS performed life-saving measures on the boy and he was taken to Hays Medical Center where he later died, a Hays police news release said.

The boy’s father was present in the motel room when authorities responded to the call.

The infant’s death was investigated. An autopsy showed he had methamphetamine in his system and “died due to complication of methamphetamine intoxication,” police said.

Leon is being held at the Ellis County Jail. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to call Hays police detectives at 785-625-1030.
