The Garden City Police Department told PEOPLE that the dogs were "hot" when they were found due to the extreme temperatures in the area (AccuWeather reports that the temperatures reached 97 degrees).

"Other than being hot when we found them, they were sweet as can be and appear to be in good health," the police department shared in an email statement to PEOPLE, adding that "temperatures were expected to be in the low triple-digits" the day of the rescue.
