It's election season in Kansas, and advance voting starts Wednesday.

Here's what to know from the Shawnee County Election Office about voting early in Topeka and Shawnee County for the August primary election.

Voter registration deadline is Tuesday

If you haven't already registered to vote, you have until 5 p.m. Tuesday.

How do I vote by mail?

Advance voting by mail starts Wednesday. That's when mail ballots will start to sent out to people who requested one.

To advance vote by mail, you must first request a mail ballot. The application is online, and you can mail a completed form to the Shawnee County Election Office, email it to electionoffice@snco.us or fax it to 785-251-5999. The deadline is July 30 for the election office to receive your request.

Mail ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within three business days in order to be counted. You may also personally deliver your mail ballot to drop box at the election office or to any polling place before polls close on Election Day.

How do I vote early in-person?

In-person advance voting starts July 22 at the Shawnee County Election Office, 3420 S.W. Van Buren St.

You may vote early between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday for the two weeks before Election Day.

In-person advance voting ends at noon Aug. 5, the Monday before the Tuesday Election Day.

What if I want to wait for Election Day?

You may also vote in-person on Election Day. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 6.

How do I check my voting information?

You may check your voting information online via VoterView from the Secretary of State's Office. Using your name and birthday, you can confirm your address, party association, mail-in ballot status and polling place location.

What races are on the ballot?

Ballots will have candidates for the primary election for several races. In Shawnee County, that includes the following:

  • Kansas' 2nd Congressional District.

  • Eight seats in the Kansas House.

  • Four seats in the Kansas Senate.

  • Two seats on the Kansas State Board of Education.

  • Shawnee County district attorney, sheriff, treasurer, clerk and register of deeds.

  • Two seats on the Shawnee County Commission.

  • Multiple township races.

  • Multiple positions for political party precinct committeemen and committeewomen.

Some primary races are uncontested.
