Kayaker rescued on Sacramento River in Redding

A kayaker reported missing on the Sacramento River in Redding on Saturday morning after their watercraft overturned has been rescued, according to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were told that a family of four — two adults and two teenagers — had launched kayaks from the Posse Grounds Boat Ramp, north of the Sundial Bridge in Redding, heading for the Bonnyview Boat Ramp. The family took a side channel of the river located north of the Highway 44 bridge, south of the Sundial Bridge.

That's where mother's kayak struck a partially-submerged tree that caused the craft to roll over, ejecting the mother into the water, according to a statement released Saturday by the sheriff's office.

The mother was forced under the swift-moving water after the kayak became caught in a tree snag along the riverbank, the release said.

The rest of the family became separated from the mother as they continued downstream. Oncehe was able, the father called 911 for help about 7 a.m., the statement said.

Responders located the father and two teenagers along the riverbank, just south of the Highway 44 bridge. Deputies took the father back to where he had last seen his wife before she went underwater.

She was located uninjured after about 25 minutes, under heavy vegetations along the riverbank.

"The wife reported she was able to pull herself ashore after going under water for a brief time and was able to get out of the water," according to the press release.

She was wearing a life jacket rated for kayaking in swift water environments, "which ultimately saved her life," the release said.

In addition to the sheriff’s office, the Redding Police Department, Redding Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol Northern Division Air Operations assisted in the rescue.
