King tides, 28-foot waves to swamp the Oregon Coast this week

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — King tides, stormy weather and 28-foot waves will wallop the Oregon Coast this week.

The especially high, seasonal tides hit the Pacific Northwest on Nov. 15, 16 and 17. Coastal flooding is possible during this period as tides may surpass the highest average tide marks by six inches or more.

Potentially deadly waves are also in the forecast to start the week, with 22 to 28-foot breakers hitting the Oregon Coast on Monday and Tuesday. The National Weather Service is issuing a high-surf advisory from 10 p.m. Monday to 10 p.m. Tuesday.

“Dangerous high surf is expected along all southern Oregon coastlines and beaches Monday evening through Tuesday evening, increasing and maxing out Tuesday morning at 25 to 28 feet,” the National Weather Service’s Medford office warns. “Surf height is expected to decrease to 20 to 25 feet Tuesday night. Use extreme caution near the beach. Keep a safe distance from the ocean. Jetties, rocks, logs and driftwood in the surf zone are not safe.”
