Knife confiscated from Columbia Middle School student

Columbia Middle School confirmed Monday a student was discovered with a knife on campus.

In a letter to parents, school officials said the student showed the knife to another student on the bus.

Columbia County School District Police responded to investigate and found a knife in the student’s possession, according to the letter. The blade was immediately secured and the student is being held accountable according to the code of conduct and the law.

No threat was made against the school, students or staff, according to the school. It is unclear if the child has been criminally charged.

"Safety of students and staff is a top priority," officials wrote in the letter. "Parents, please speak with your student about items that are not appropriate for school and the serious consequences that will follow."

Suspicious behavior should always be quickly reported to a school administrator, Columbia County School District Police, or by contacting the CCSD anonymous tip hotline at 706-541-3600.
