Krewe of Freret cleans out catch basins along parade route during hurricane season

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Mardi Gras krewes understand that they contribute to the catch basins clogging with some of their throws during their parades. With hurricane season upon us, now’s the time to clean them out, and that’s exactly what the Krewe of Freret is doing.

The Krewe of Freret will be cleaning out the catch basins along the parade route on Napoleon Avenue.

“The route of floats take, so we thought it was an appropriate place to start. There is clearly a need whether we have storms or not. We will certainly have rain events like we do every summer, so this is an important time to get this done,” said Captain of the Krewe of Freret Bobby Hjortsberg.

Hjortsberg is checking out the catch basins to see which ones they’ll need to be clearing out this weekend.

“There’s a middle piece and you slide it off with two people, with shovels and a crowbar, and slides off pretty easily, and there’s a hole that leads to where the pipes are, and a lot of times that hole is clogged,” he said.

He went on to say, “We will also be cleaning up in front of the catch basins. There’s debris in front, which prevents them from draining.”

The Krewe of Freret does several community service events throughout the year, but this is the first time they’ll be cleaning out the catch basins.

Tropical Depression 2 forms, will likely become a hurricane

“We think service events are important. New Orleans is a city we love, and a city we’ve been able to flourish in during Mardi Gras, so this is just our way to give back,” Hjortsberg said.

Even if you aren’t in the Krewe of Freret, you can still come out and help them clean out the catch basins and make new friends with Freret members.

The cleanup starts at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 30 and they are asking you to meet at Tipitina’s on Napoleon Avenue.

Singer Boyfriend is now the Krewe’s “Sustainability Advisor.” The Krewe will no longer throw plastic beads.

The Krewe of Freret currently has more than one thousand members. For more information, visit the Krewe of Freret’s website.
