Ky. fire department calls out prosecutor for not charging teens accused of stealing gear
A Kentucky fire department and commonwealth’s attorney had a back-and-forth exchange over an incident where teenagers allegedly stole thousands of dollars worth of equipment from the fire department a few years ago.
In a Facebook post on Monday, the Rough of Falls Fire Department called out Grayson County Commonwealth Attorney Rick Hardin and noted that the teens accused of stealing the turnout equipment won’t face any charges.
“Mr. Hardin and office even asked the fire department to reduce the amount of money owed for the gear and equipment which was never recovered or returned,” the fire department said in the Facebook post. “This is exactly why there are so many repeat criminals in our county!”
The incident happened in July 2022 and the teens allegedly stole over $25,000 worth of gear.
Hardin responded to the fire department’s post in the comments section, saying the teens deserved a second chance.
“Any of you that think teenagers don’t deserve a second chance before being shipped off to prison are a part of the problem and definitely not the solution,” Hardin said in a comment.
Hardin added the teens could face time in prison if they don’t pay the restitution or break the law again.
“All of our kids deserve consideration for being kids and not being convicted felons for the rest of their lives, not being able to vote, or not being able to hunt,” Hardin said in a comment.
