Lafayette woman dead after crash in Ascension Parish

ASCENSION PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) — The Louisiana State Police are investigating a deadly crash in Ascension Parish.

Troopers were called to a two-vehicle crash Wednesday on Louisiana 74 at Chester Diez Road in Ascension Parish. Police identified the victim as Jean Ducote, 90, of Lafayette.

According to LSP, a 2012 Mazda 6 was heading east on Louisiana 74 approaching Chester Diez Road. At the same time, a 2014 Ford Escape was heading east on Louisiana 74 behind the Mazda. As the Mazda was attempting to make a right turn onto Chester Diez Road, the Ford “failed to brake, and collided with the rear of the Mazda,” LSP said.

As a result of the collision, the Mazda went off the road and entered a ditch, according to LSP.

State police said that Ducote was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, but suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. On Thursday, July 18, Ducote died due to her injuries at the hospital, according to LSP.

A routine toxicology sample was taken for testing. This is an ongoing investigation.
