Lake Tahoe sees significant reduction in trash after Fourth of July

(FOX40.COM) — After the Fourth of July in 2023, Keep Tahoe Blue said beaches at Lake Tahoe were filled with a record-high amount of trash.

Fast forward to 2024, and the organization said the amount of trash picked up after Independence Day wasn’t even one-quarter of the trash left behind by partiers one year ago.

Beloved Lake Tahoe destination to soon require reservations

About 2,000 pounds of trash was still left behind, which was picked up by over 700 volunteers, a beach-cleaning robot from ECO-CLEAN Solutions, and divers from Clean Up The Lake. But cleanup organizers say that number is around the average amount of litter found during July 5 cleanups.

Marilee Movius, the senior community engagement manager for the League to Save Lake Tahoe, said, “[On Friday,] we saw clear evidence that people went out of their way to protect Tahoe, which includes land managers, an amazing number of volunteers and partners, and the tens of thousands of people who spent their holiday on the beach.”

“Thank you for helping to Keep Tahoe Blue,” Movius continued. “Now, let’s keep this going through the weekend and all summer.”

The 2024 cleanup event was organized with the support of the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s donors and partners, including California State Parks, the City of South Lake Tahoe, Clean Up The Lake, ECO-CLEAN Solutions, and many more.
